For What It's Worth
by Karey White

Twenty-four year-old, Abby Benson has dreams of owning her own wedding cake shop. An inheritance from her aunt gives her the ability to make those dreams come true. She hires Dane, a handsome contractor, to help her get the bakery up and running and soon they're moving toward their own happy ending.

Unsure what to charge for her cakes, Abby has a crazy idea to let the customers decide what they think their cake is worth. This plan has its ups and downs, but the novelty of the idea makes her a local celebrity. When she is interviewed on television about the unusual idea, business booms and Abby has cake adventures she never dreamed possible. But as her fame grows, Abby is swept up in a whirlwind that threatens everything she values. With the challenges that face her, will she be able to determine what is worth the most?

We've all heard the phrase, "Don't judge a book by it's cover." As a metaphor, it's a good idea. Don't judge a person by how they look. Sometimes someone who looks great is a creep and sometimes someone who looked intimidating ends up being a big softy. You can't always judge the interior of a house by the exterior. Sometimes a house looks great on the outside but the inside is a disaster.

But how about if we take the quote literally? Don't judge a book by it's cover. Have you ever picked up a book and hated the cover, but still bought the book? Did you even pick up the book whose cover you hated?

In my experience, the cover makes a world of difference. If the cover didn't matter, publishers could save a lot of time, energy and money just covering every book in plain, brown paper.

As an author, one of my biggest fears was what my cover would look like. I knew from my contract that the publisher would come up with the cover and that I'd have little to no say in the final product. So it was with a sick stomach and a lot of anxiety that I opened the emails that said "cover." When I wrote Gifted, I had some ideas of what I thought the cover should look like. I'd paid particular attention to the covers on recent releases and honestly, I hated some of them. I was so nervous. And then I downloaded the picture and it loaded slowly from top to bottom. When I had the full cover, I nearly cried. It was beautiful and I was so relieved.

Because of that experience, I had a little more confidence the second time around. And I wasn't disappointed. I love the cover for For What It's Worth. I don't think I could have done better on either of these books if I'd done them myself.

Even though an unattractive cover may surround a wonderful story, there's less chance I'll want to spend my money or time to get to the story. I think that's why authors and publishers need to treat the design of the cover as carefully as they treat the text inside. Otherwise, readers may never get to the inside.

  2. I loved, loved, loved reading "For What It's Worth." It was a fun book with enough romance to hold my interest. And i loved the twists and turns in the bakery as well as in the relationship. Great Job.

I also read "Gifted" by Karey White. If you haven't read this beautiful story, you must. It is amazing.

I look forward to more books by Karey White.

  3. Covers DO make a big difference when you're looking for a book to read by an unknown author. They're what catch your eye and make you pick up the book to look at the blurb. And For What It's Worth has a gorgeous cover!
