Cornered: Release Day & Giveaway

Available NOW from J.A. Belfield…

CORNEREDDaniel Larsen is playing a dangerous game, and he doesn’t even know it.

A two-wheeled speedster. A little redhead in a bar. Evenings spent away from his pack. Innocent enough for most, but for Danny, the combination leads down a path of destruction and straight to a hell he doesn’t even see coming.

Entangled in a nightmare that started with his own brother and the cat he brought into their home, Dan’s driving himself toward a solitary existence—except for the curvaceous Olivia Fanella. Seduced by his new companion, and happy to ignore the divide growing between himself and the pack, Danny is oblivious to the trap being laid out for him.

Before long, Danny’s integrity gets questioned. His loyalty gets questioned. Hell, he even questions himself.

On top of that, just when he believes life might be going a little better, he gets served the roughest shot he could never have imagined—not even in his worst nightmares—and Danny has no idea how to come back from a hit like that.

Alex Craft knows how to kill someone. And she doesn't feel bad about it. When her older sister, Anna, was murdered three years ago and the killer walked free, Alex uncaged the language she knows best. The language of violence.

While her crime goes unpunished, Alex knows she can't be trusted among other people, even in her small hometown. She relegates herself to the shadows, a girl who goes unseen in plain sight, unremarkable in the high school hallways.

But Jack Fisher sees her. He's the guy all other guys want to be: the star athlete gunning for valedictorian with the prom queen on his arm. Guilt over the role he played the night Anna's body was discovered hasn't let him forget Alex over the years, and now her green eyes amid a constellation of freckles have his attention. He doesn't want to only see Alex Craft; he wants to know her.

So does Peekay, the preacher's kid, a girl whose identity is entangled with her dad's job, though that does not stop her from knowing the taste of beer or missing the touch of her ex-boyfriend. When Peekay and Alex start working together at the animal shelter, a friendship forms and Alex's protective nature extends to more than just the dogs and cats they care for.

Circumstances bring Alex, Jack, and Peekay together as their senior year unfolds. While partying one night, Alex's darker nature breaks out, setting the teens on a collision course that will change their lives forever.

YA thrillers are so interesting. I like seeing how authors handle such an unsympathetic theme within the YA genre.

Review: Eleven Things I Promised by Catherine Clark

Eleven Things I Promised
by Catherine Clark

Seventeen-year-old Frances wouldn't describe herself as adventurous. She certainly isn't the kind of person who would sleep under the stars or bleach her hair or have a truly epic kiss. Until now.
For the next week Frances will be away from home, competing in a bike race with friends from her high school. But while her teammates are determined to get first place, Frances has another goal: Before she crosses the finish line, she will have done every single thing on the Fix-It List. Ten crazy, totally out-of-character ideas her best friend, Stella, came up with to make the ride unforgettable. Ten things that Frances has to do on her own because of the accident that left Stella broken and angry...and Frances struggling to find a way to reconnect with her friend.
However, as each item on the list opens Frances up to new adventures, new friends, and possibly even a new romance, it becomes increasingly difficult for her to keep the one promise that she knows she absolutely must obey - her promise to not tell anyone the truth about what happened to Stella. When it comes to friendship, Frances must decide what distances she's willing to go and what risks she's willing to take for the person she cares about the most.

Eight Things I Promise I liked about this book

- The road trip feel to it. I like when people who wouldn't normally spend time together are forced to.
- The challenge. Frances hadn't trained for the bike trip but she's doing it anyway.
- The determination. It takes determination to stick with difficult things.
- The growth. I love how the characters grow throughout the book.
- The list. Just like l enjoy road trip books, I enjoy list books. Trying to accomplish a bucket list of sorts forces you to do things you normally wouldn't. Granted some of the items on this list were awkward but it still made for a nice addiction to the book.
- The breakfast club feel. The jock, the overachiever, the silent type...you get the gist. It was a group of kids from different social groups trying (or not trying) to get along.
- Side characters. Meeting some of the characters during the bike trip.
- Stella. She has a lot to overcome. I can't even imagine how I'd handle it if I were her.

Review: Summer of Sloane by Erin L. Schneider

Summer of Sloane
by Erin L. Schneider

Amazon
Goodreads

Warm Hawaiian sun. Lazy beach days. Flirty texts with her boyfriend back in Seattle.
These are the things seventeen-year-old Sloane McIntyre pictured when she imagined the summer she'd be spending at her mom's home in Hawaii with her twin brother, Penn. Instead, after learning an unthinkable secret about her boyfriend, Tyler, and best friend, Mick, all she has is a fractured hand and a completely shattered heart.
Once she arrives in Honolulu, though, Sloane hopes that Hawaii might just be the escape she needs. With beach bonfires, old friends, exotic food, and the wonders of a waterproof cast, there's no reason Sloane shouldn't enjoy her summer. And when she meets Finn McAllister, the handsome son of a hotel magnate who doesn't always play by the rules, she knows he's the perfect distraction from everything that's so wrong back home.
But it turns out a measly ocean isn't nearly enough to stop all the emails, texts, and voicemails from her ex-boyfriend and ex-best friend, desperate to explain away their betrayal. And as her casual connection with Finn grows deeper, Sloane's carefree summer might not be as easy to find as she'd hoped. Weighing years of history with Mick and Tyler against their deception, and the delicate possibility of new love, Sloane must decide when to forgive, and when to live for herself.

Things I liked about Summer of Sloane:

Location - I mean come on...Hawaii people! I'd love to see all of these places someday. Well that is if they exist in real life.

Characters - I liked Sloane's character and some of the side characters as well. I wonder if any of the side characters will get their own book in the future. Shep maybe? or Luce? Or Penn? I'd read any of their books for sure.

Family relationships - I love that Sloane has (mostly) good relationships with her family.

Water - I love being around water so I really enjoyed all of the ocean, pool, etc. scenes!

The message - There are some good take aways for the reader.

Review: The Hatching by Ezekiel Boone

The Hatching
By Ezekiel Boone
Release Date: July 5, 2016

Amazon
Goodreads

An astonishingly inventive and terrifying debut novel about the emergence of an ancient species, dormant for over a thousand years, and now on the march.
Deep in the jungle of Peru, where so much remains unknown, a black, skittering mass devours an American tourist whole. Thousands of miles away, an FBI agent investigates a fatal plane crash in Minneapolis and makes a gruesome discovery. Unusual seismic patterns register in a Kanpur, India earthquake lab, confounding the scientists there. During the same week, the Chinese government "accidentally" drops a nuclear bomb in an isolated region of its own country. As those incidents begin to sweep the globe, a mysterious package from South America arrives at a Washington, D.C. laboratory. Something wants out.
The world is on the brink of an apocalyptic disaster. An ancient species, long dormant, is now very much awake.

My thoughts:

*Note: I won The Hatching from the publisher & goodreads but that in no way changes my thoughts on the book.*

"There's a reason we're afraid of spiders."

What a perfect tagline for this book. The spiders in The Hatching are fierce and I, for one, would certainly fear them.

I enjoyed reading this book but I have to admit I was expecting a bit more spider action. The action that was there didn't disappoint. I know a couple scenes will stick in my head for quite a while...like every time I sneeze.

I, also, could have done with a few less story lines. While they were interesting and did give a sense of the magnitude of the problem, it also tended to take away from the growing suspense.

Ezekiel Boone definitely has my attention and I'm looking forward to seeing where he takes the story in book 2. I'm hoping for a lot of spiderific, shiver inducing drama!

I'd also love to see The Hatching be optioned for a movie or tv mini series. You think you had the willies during Arachnophobia? The Hatching, as a movie, would make it look like child's play. It would be terrifying and I would be the first in line to see it.

3.5 of 5 - Worth the read but I was hoping for a little more action.
