Shelf Candy Saturday (18): The Archived by Victoria Schwab

Shelf Candy Saturday is hosted by A Night's Dream of Books.

The Archived by Victoria Schwab

Imagine a place where the dead rest on shelves like books.

Each body has a story to tell, a life seen in pictures that only Librarians can read. The dead are called Histories, and the vast realm in which they rest is the Archive.

Da first brought Mackenzie Bishop here four years ago, when she was twelve years old, frightened but determined to prove herself. No da is dead, and Mac has grown into what he once was, a ruthless Keeper, tasked with stopping often-violent Histories from waking up and getting out. Because of her job, she lies to the people she loves, and she knows fear for what it is: a useful tool for staying alive.

Being a Keeper isn't just dangerous - it's a constant reminder of those Mac has lost. Da's death was hard enought, but now her little brother is gone too. Mac starts to wonder about the boundary between living and dying, sleeping and waking. In the Archive, the dead must never be disturbed. And yet, someone is deliberately altering Histories, erasing essential chapters. Unless Mac can piece together what remains, the Archive itself might crumble and fall.

What an intriguing book cover and description!  I love blue covers and this book is yet another example of why. The smoke whisps and the key create such a mysterious feel. Who is this girl and does she hold the key to some big mystery? I can't wait to find out! I also love that the author is using bookish terms and twisting the meanings around.

  1. Huh, I didn't even notice that the background is brick walls until just now.

  2. Hi, Jen!

WOW. What a GORGEOUS cover!! You know I have a weakness for blue covers, right? Well, I LOVE this one!! It's completely unique -- I've never seen anything even remotely like it. The girl's head coming out of blue mist, the key above her head...this is brilliant design!!

The plot also sounds very intriguing and different. People are indeed like books, in a way. There are chapters to every life, as well as good guys and villains, love stories, tales of war, political intrigue, and even some type of fantasy. Very interesting concept!

Thank you so much for sharing such a beautiful cover, with such an interesting plot behind it!

P.S. By the way, could you use the button I have on this Saturday's post instead of the one above? You see, the one above contains an image that I don't own. The button I'm using now contains an image (the rainbow-colored books) that I bought from a stock photo website. I would greatly appreciate it if you would use that button instead of this one. This not only protects me, but you as well. If you take a look at one of my recent posts, you'll see that bloggers can get sued for using images that don't belong to them. Thanks for your cooperation!! : )

  3. Love how the smoke transitions into the image of the young girl. And what is she a key to? Great choice this week!

  4. Very cool choice! I like the smoke and the tone of the blue, but I love that key. It really sticks out against the dark backdrop.

  5. The book cover is indeed gorgeous. I also like the author's usage of bookish/library terms in it (librarians will definitely love this one). I read 100 pages (it was a sample) from NetGalley, and I loved what I was reading! I can't wait to read the entire novel next year.
