Shelf Candy Saturday (2) - Burn Bright & Angel Arias

Some friends were talking about these books earlier and I thought they would be perfect shelf candy!

Burn Bright (Night Creatures #1) by Marianne de Pierres

Into a world of wild secrets and deadly pleasures comes a girl whose innocence may be her greatest strength.

In Ixion music and party are our only beliefs. Darkness is our comfort. We have few rules but they are absolute . . .

Retra doesn’t want to go to Ixion, the island of ever-night, ever-youth and never-sleep. Retra is a Seal – sealed minds, sealed community. She doesn’t crave parties and pleasure, experience and freedom.

But her brother Joel left for Ixion two years ago, and Retra is determined to find him. Braving the intense pain of her obedience strip to escape the only home she’s ever known, Retra stows away on the barge that will take her to her brother.

When she can’t find Joel, Retra finds herself drawn deeper into the intoxicating world of Ixion. Come to me, whispers a voice in her head. Who are the Ripers, the mysterious guardians of Ixion? What are the Night Creatures Retra can see in the shadows? And what happens to those who grow too old for Ixion?

Retra will find that Ixion has its pleasures, but its secrets are deadly. Will friendship, and the creation of an eternal bond with a Riper, be enough to save her from the darkness?

Listen well, baby bats. Burn bright, but do not stray from the paths. Remember, when you live in a place of darkness you also live with creatures of the dark.

I'm not sure what I think about the pink and yellow text but over all I love this cover! It's so dark and creeptastic!! I also like the smudgyness and drippyness feel of the cover.

Angel Arias (Night Creatures #2) by Marianne de Pierres

Retra - now called Naif - has escaped from Ixion, the island of ever-night. She doesn't know if her friends on the island survived the battle between the Ripers and the rebels. But she does know that she must return home, behind the sealed walls of Grave, to find out why the Ripers have been seen there talking to the councillors. What links the two worlds?

First she must convince Ruzalia to help her. The fierce pirate captain saves those who face terrible fates on Ixion, but that doesn't guarantee their gratitude. Instead, she faces a revolt - and Naif is caught in the middle.

Naif will need all her courage to survive. For Lenoir, who wants to keep her safe, for her friends Suki and Rollo, if they live, for Markes, who has secrets of his own, and for the new friends she will make on this journey.

The fate of worlds depends on it.

This cover has the same dark feel to it. I also think the title color fits much better with the rest of the cover!

Werewolf in Greenwich Village & Werewolf in the North Woods by Vicki Lewis Thompson

Werewolf in Greenwich Village (Wild About You #1.5) novella

Quentin Wallace has it all. He’s got money in the bank from his lucrative job as a Manhattan contractor, and he runs with the big dogs of his were pack. But when he meets and falls for Nadia – who’s soon to be named the leader of New York’s Henderson pack – he knows he’s in over his head. Nadia belongs to a rarefied world; Quentin would sooner be seen in torn jeans than in an Armani suit. But when Nadia’s new position is threatened by a rebel were, Quentin has a chance to prove his worthiness and his love – and show her the alpha-male inside.

My Thoughts:

I enjoyed the first book in this series (Werewolf in Manhattan) and I absolutely had planned to read the second book (Werewolf in the North Woods) but this novella really gave me that push to read it sooner rather than later. I was sucked in more than with the first book and I had high hopes for how much I would love the next in the series.

Overall Rating: 5 out of 5

Which brings me to…

Werewolf in the North Woods (Wild About You #2)

When she used to walk around her grandfather’s property outside Portland, Abby Winchell loved the idea that Bigfoot was somewhere out there too. Now her grandfather swears he’s seen two creatures that fit the legendary description – and he has evidence. Sort of. Grandpa Earl may be a bit dotty, but when his neighbors invite a renowned anthropologist to disprove his theory, Abby decides to send the man packing…until she sees how hot he is.

Anthropology professor Roark Wallace can’t risk news being made of Bigfoot sighting in the north woods – not with a local pack of werewolves to protect. Disproving the evidence should be easy, but ignoring Abby is not. Her fiery red hair makes him want to sit up and beg, and this obvious attraction is making the pack suspicious…

My Thoughts:

I am loving all of the new types of paranormal creatures that I’ve come across in books recently. This time around, the characters of choice were werewolves and big foots…or would it be ‘big feet’…or is big foot the singular and plural?! Ack, you know what I mean, I’ll just say BF to make it easier on myself. Aaaanyway, Roark alone is a big reason to love this book, but I also have a weakness for sexy werewolves ;)

Roark and Abby are on opposite sides but because Abby is very cunning they end up working together to find the BF. Roark wants to protect the BF and wants to continue to hide their existence and Abby wants to prove their existence, thereby proving Grandpa Earl isn’t looney.

They are both attracted to each other (and that’s putting it mildly) but know it would be a terrible idea for it to go any further than attraction. This tension makes for an interesting (and entertaining) trek in the woods. Can they keep their hands/paws off of each other? Will they find the BF and what will happen when they do?

I loved this book and I hope Werewolf in Seattle lives up to my high expectations!

Bloggiesta

I'm a bit late signing up but I decided to participate in Bloggiesta this weekend. It's actually perfect timing since the hubby works most of the weekend!

Check out It's All About Books blog to learn more or to sign up. Basically, the point of Bloggiesta is to take the time to both spiff up your blog and accomplish some of those things you've been meaning to do but just kept pushing aside. The list may change but I listed a few things I would like to tackle.

-Have a rotating blog roll in my footer<=This about had me beat! But I managed to get the marquee working in my footer. I will add more buttons another day. Thank you to Juju at Tales of Whimsy for giving me the code for the marquee :)
-Update my challenges and book reviews pages
-Create a rating system
-Create a Shelf Candy Button <= This one could be fun!
-Write reviews and schedule posts for my backlog of books
-Create & schedule posts for upcoming giveaways <= I worked on this a little bit but I still have more to do
-Decide if I want to use a signature on my posts <=I decided against this for now
-Rearrange my sidebar <=I did a little of this too but will continue to work on it :)

Overall I did accomplish some things but not as much I would have liked. I will definitely continue to work on my list though!

Urban Fantasy Recommendations

Ali @ Winged Reviews was talking about not having read many books in the Urban Fantasy genre so I thought I would do a quick post and recommend the few that I’ve read in the genre so far. The titles are linked to Goodreads.

·        Blood Song (Blood Singer #1) by Cat Adams (my review)

·        Blood Drive by Traci Houston

·        Bound by Blood (The Garner Witch #1) by P.A. Lupton (my review)

·        Discount Armageddon (InCryptid #1) by Seanan McGuire (my review)

·        Sookie Stackhouse Series  by Charlaine Harris – I think this would be considered Urban Fantasy

·        Immortality Bites Series by Michelle Rowen – Again, I think this is considered Urban Fantasy

Alpha & Omega Series by Patricia Briggs

·        Alpha & Omega (Novella Prequel to Alpha & Omega Series, you can find this in On the Prowl anthology) ç it’s important to read this before starting the series…trust me!

·        Cry Wolf (Alpha & Omega #1)

·        Hunting Ground (Alpha & Omega #2)

·        Fair Game (Alpha & Omega #3) çI’m almost finished reading this & I’m loving it!

Have you read any good 4 or 5 star Urban Fantasy books that you can recommend?

The Last Page (Living, Loving and Laughing Again #1) by Lacy Camey

Norah Johnson is at a crossroads and is in desperate need to heal after a highly publicized breakup from her major league baseball player boyfriend. To escape, she moves to her summer home at the beach with her sister and best friend where she journals, attends therapy and works on her pending clothing line. When a gorgeous stranger finds her journal, he seeks to find the author and make her fall in love with him. But is Norah ready to love again?

My Thoughts:

The beginning was a little bit slow for me. Norah has her heart broken and although I completely understand that it can mess you up for a spell, I couldn’t help but be annoyed with her. Maybe the idea behind the book is the process of healing but I just didn’t sympathize with her.

I am glad I decided to keep with it because it turned around for me and I ended up enjoying the story. It’s a cute book that made me chuckle and aawww. I also love the tie in with the title, although you don’t really understand the meaning of it until the end of the book.

Overall Rating:

I’m a little wishy washy on my rating for this book. I’m bouncing back and forth between a 3.5 & a 4. But I think the fact that I’m not instantly giving this a 4 should tell me something. In other words I have settled on a 3.5 rating. Final answer.

Undead and Unwed (Undead #1) by MaryJanice Davidson

It’s been a helluva week for Betsy Taylor. First, she loses her job. Then, to top things off, she’s killed in a car accident. But what really bites (besides waking up in the morgue dressed in a pink suit and cheap shoes courtesy of her stepmother) is that she can’t seem to stay dead. Every night she rises with a horrible craving for blood. She’s not taking too well to a liquid diet.

Worst of all, her new friends have the ridiculous idea that Betsy is the prophesied vampire queen, and they want her help in overthrowing the most obnoxious, power-hungry vampire in five centuries – a badly dressed Bela Lugosi wannabe, natch. Frankly, Betsy couldn’t care less about vamp politics, but they have a powerful weapon of persuasion: designer shoes. How can any self-respecting girl say no? But a collection of Ferragamos isn’t the only temptation for Betsy. It’s just a lot safer than the scrumptious Sinclair – a seductive bloodsucker whose sexy gaze seems as dangerous as a stake through the heart…

My Thoughts:

Betsy, the main character, has one hell of a mouth on her and I so love her for it! She is definitely not afraid to give people a piece of her mind…although it does tend to get her in trouble on occasion! She’s just a regular woman, a recently laid off secretary to be exact, who wakes up dead (çHubs and I bring up that scene from Scary Movie 3 a lot, lol). After an, um adjustment period, she begins to learn the hard way that she cannot just go back to ‘living life’ the way she was before. I will definitely be continuing this series to see what kind of trouble she can get herself into.

Discount Armageddon (InCryptid #1) by Seanan McGuire

Ghoulies. Ghosties. Long-legged beasties. Things that go bump in the night… The Price family has spent generations studying the monsters of the world, working to protect them from humanity and humanity from them. Enter Verity Price. Despite being trained from birth as a cryptozoologist, she’d rather dance a tango than tangle with a demon, and is spending a year in Manhattan while she pursues her career in professional ballroom dance. Sounds pretty simple, right? It would be, if it weren’t for the talking mice, the telepathic mathematicians, the asbestos supermodels, and the trained monster-hunter sent by the Price family’s old enemies, the Covenant of St. George. When a Price girl meets a Covenant boy, high stakes, high heels, and a lot of collateral damage are almost guaranteed. To complicate matter further, local cryptids are disappearing, strand lizard-men are appearing in the sewers, and someone’s spreading rumors about a dragon sleeping under the city…

My Thoughts:

I was a little hesitant to read this book. It seemed like it would be a bit more into the Fantasy genre than I normally read. Turns out it was a mostly seated in the Urban Fantasy group. As in a lot of Urban Fantasy books, there’s a kick butt character and a decent amount of action. Verity is one of the main characters and she has been raised to know how to protect herself. It’s a good thing too because she gets into some awkward and dangerous situations.

There was also a vast array of paranormal creatures/people (aka cyptid’s) in this book. It was a lot to keep strait but overall I enjoyed the variety. My favorite cryptid was the boogeyman! He was so spooky when he played his boogeyman games!

Let me know what you think of this book if you’ve read it!

Touch of Power (Healer #1) by Maria V. Snyder

Laying hands upon the injured and dying, Avry of Kazan absorbs their wounds and diseases into herself. But rather than being honored for her skills, she is hunted. Healers like Avry are accused of spreading the plague that has decimated the Fifteen Realms, leaving the survivors in a state of chaos.
Stressed and tired from hiding, Avry is abducted by a band of rogues who, shockingly, value her gift above the golden bounty offered for her capture. Their leader, an enigmatic captor-protector with powers of his own, is unequivocal in his demands: Avry must heal a plague-stricken prince—leader of a campaign against her people. As they traverse the daunting Nine Mountains, beset by mercenaries and magical dangers, Avry must decide who is worth healing and what is worth dying for. Because the price of peace may well be her life…

My Thoughts:

If you have read and loved Maria V. Snyder’s Study/Glass books then you will definitely enjoy Touch of Power as well. The writing style and overall feel of Touch of Power is comparable to her other books and the characters have similar traits between the series as well. I think Touch of Power and Poison Study (see my review here) are just about tied for my favorite MVS book.

Maria is great at writing characters you will love and characters you will hate…and characters you have to learn to love. Touch of Power is no exception and has a nice mix of characters to love and/or hate. If you have not read any of her books yet, then what are you waiting for?!?! Just kidding...sort of ;) But really, Maria is one of my favorite authors and this book does not disappoint!

Shelf Candy Saturday (1) Luminosity & When the Sea is Rising Red

For my very first Shelf Candy post, I decided to showcase two book covers.

Luminosity by Stephanie Thomas

My name is Beatrice. When I was born, I was blessed with the Sight. I was immediately removed from my parents and enrolled in the Institution. At the age of twelve, I had my first true vision, earning my raven’s wings. And when I turned seventeen, one of my visions came true. Things haven’t been the same since.

The Institution depends on me to keep the City safe from our enemy, the Dreamcatchers, but I’m finding it harder to do while keeping a secret from everyone, including my best friend Gabe. It is a secret that could put us all in danger. A secret that could kill me and everyone close to me.

The enemy has been coming to me in my dreams, and I think I'm falling in love with him. He says they're coming. He says they're angry. And I think I've already helped them win.

This cover really caught my eye when I first saw it. For one, I love blue and I'm sure you'll be seeing many more blue covers on my Shelf Candy posts! I also really like her eye make up...all it takes is one small detail to make the cover all that more interesting.

When the Sea is Rising Red by Cat Hellisen

After seventeen-year-old Felicita’s dearest friend, Ilven, kills herself to escape an arranged marriage, Felicita chooses freedom over privilege. She fakes her own death and leaves her sheltered life as one of Pelimburg’s magical elite behind. Living in the slums, scrubbing dishes for a living, she falls for charismatic Dash while also becoming fascinated with vampire Jannik. Then something shocking washes up on the beach: Ilven's death has called out of the sea a dangerous, wild magic. Felicita must decide whether her loyalties lie with the family she abandoned . . . or with those who would twist this dark power to destroy Pelimburg's caste system, and the whole city along with  it.

This is another newer book that I've come across. I have to admit that the little red swooshy thing separating the title from the authors name bugs me a bit, but aside from that I really like this cover. It looks spooky with the soft misty water and what is most likely a dead body.

Random Crumbs

It's been a while since I've done one of these posts and I'm sure you're wondering what it is. It's pretty much any random tidbit I come across and want to share. In the past it has mostly been 'Today in History' posts.

Crumb #1 - The sign ups are now open for Dewey's 24 Hour Read-a-Thon in April! Yay! That means it's time to start planning a booklist and snacks...and how to get my hubby out of the house for part of the weekend, haha!

You can sign up here and I also have a linked button on my side bar ==>

Crumb #2 - IT'S FRIDAY!!! Not that I'm excited about that or anything!

AND what makes it even better is that it's HUNGER GAMES DAY!!! I bought tickets for hubs and I to see it tonight at 8:30pm EST!! I'm wondering if hubby will regret agreeing to go, haha, only time will tell.

Did anyone go to the midnight showing? What did you think of the movie (no spoilers please!)??

Crumb #3 - Jennifer L. Armentrout is giving away swag for her awesome books! Check it out here.

From the wording of the post it seems like everyone who preorders the rerelease of Obsidian (which also has bonus materials) will get a swag pack. Now I could have misunderstood and it very well could be a regular giveaway with one winner, but it's still a great prize!

Crumb #4 - I'm starting my first official meme tomorrow! Thank you to everyone who voted on which meme they would like to see.

I will be linking up with Five Alarm Book Reviews blog and doing the Shelf Candy Saturday posts! I've been having so much fun looking up possible covers to showcase. The only problem is that there's a LOT of covers that I love so it will be tough to choose every week! I may start off by doing two covers per week and see how that works out.

Crumb #5 - I don't know who comes up with these things but today is National Chip & Dip day here in the US! Yums! Chips have been my favorite junk food lately!

Well that everything! Have a great weekend everyone!!

Falling Under (Falling Under #1) by Gwen Hayes

Theia Alderson has always led a sheltered life in the small California town of Serendipity Falls. But when a devastatingly handsome boy appears in the halls of her school, Theia knows she’s seen Haden before-not around town, but in her dreams.

As the Haden of both the night and the day beckons her closer one moment and pushes her away the next, the only thing Theia knows for sure is that the incredible pull she feels towards him is stronger than her fear.

And when she discovers what Haden truly is, Theia’s not sure if she wants to resist him, even if the cost is her soul.

My Thoughts:

Hhmm, where to start. Well I’ll start by saying I’m at a loss at how to rate this book. I’m almost tempted to rate/review the book in two parts. Yes, that’s what I’ll do. Here goes…

Part One aka the first half of the book – I will give this part a 1.5 and I’m sorry, but this may be a bit of a rant. And I really hate to rant about books but I think it’s necessary. This book affected me so heavily that I was literally huffing angrily and cursing at the book. I honestly want to tear pages from the book (not that I would actually do that). Why such hostility? The beginning plot reminded me of two other books that I didn’t like (Fallen and Evermore <= my reviews are linked). I know this wouldn’t bother everyone but it just grated on my nerves. Good girl meets bad boy…bad boy is all warm and fuzzy one minute than an ass the next…girl barely thinks twice about putting herself in grave danger to be with warm and fuzzy/ass. It’s been done and I didn’t like it the first two times around. I think I need to try harder to avoid books with this plot. I should give this part of the book a 1, but I did somewhat enjoy the occasional spooky scene so that earned it half a star/point.

Part Two aka the second half of the book – I will give this part a 3.5…maybe a 3 because of the hint of lingering frustration now that I’m thinking back to the beginning of the book. Anyway… I was SO SO SO relieved (SO relieved) when the book turned around for me. It was at almost the exact half way mark where the frustration was slowly replaced with curiosity and the cursing quieted down. I was wondering where the story would go but I still wouldn’t go as far as to say that it blew me away. I can’t really say too much without posting spoilers but I will say that there were some interesting twists and the second half of the book was overall a much easier read.

Please just remember that my goal is to not steer people away from reading it…just because it drove me nuts doesn’t me you’ll feel the same.

Overall Rating:
It’s really hard for me to pick a rating for this book because I was so split on it. But I think I will go with a number between my two above ratings and settle on 2.5

To Meme or Not To Meme

I've been thinking about starting a weekly meme and was hoping all of my lovely readers would be willing to vote for which you would rather see. Click on the blog names to see an example.

Option A - Shelf Candy Saturday, created by Five Alarm Book Reviews

Option B - Fun Friday, created by Wall-to-Wall Books

Option C - Wordless Wednesday, I don't have a specific example of this but I've seen these posts randomly on other blogs. Instead of a normal post, I would be posting a picture...most likely it will be pics that I've taken over the years.

Option D - TGIF at GReads, created by GReads <== I'm not sure if I would do this every week, I guess it depended on the question...and how busy I am since this one cannot be scheduled ahead of time.

If you have a preference, just comment and let me know which option! Thanks much!

**Update - Shelf Candy Saturday had the most votes and I've officially started the meme. My first and second Shelf Candy posts are linked at the end of the post.

Feel free to continue to vote as I may add another meme at some point

Patricia Briggs Book Signing

I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to meet Patricia Briggs at a book signing in Exton, PA last night! The signing was at Barnes & Nobles. It's a gorgeous BN so if you ever find yourself in Exton be sure check it out! It was a bit of a hike for us to get there after work but hubs and I managed to make it there early to get our wrist bands then grab a bite to eat before the signing.

My hubby voluntarily went with me to the signing which worked out nicely because I was able to get more books signed that way :). He's not a reader so I'm pretty sure he regretted going but oh well, he survived! Haha!

Patricia is very nice and funny! She read the first chapter of Fair Game and answered a few questions. Did you know that Fair Game is not the last Alpha & Omega book?! Woo hoo!

<== Sorry for the fuzzy pic!

She then signed books for everyone. She was great about allowing everyone to go through the signing line twice if they had more than the two book limit. Thanks to that and to my hubby, I was able to get 8 books signed! I was so excited!

7 of those 8 books will be an awesome addition to my signed books collection.

The last signed book is a second copy of Fair Game which I will be giving away on here. I haven't decided when or how I will give it away so make sure you check back every so often so you don't miss it!

It was a long evening, but it was definitely worth the trip! And with any luck I'll be able to catch another Patricia Briggs signing in the future!

Message in a Bottle - A Book and a Movie

Message in a Bottle - The Book
Thrown to the waves, and to fate, the bottle could have ended up anywhere. Instead, it is found just three weeks after it begins its journey. Theresa Osborne, divorced and the mother of a twelve-year-old son, discovers it during a seaside vacation from her job as a Boston newspaper columnist. Inside is a letter that opens with, "My Dearest Catherine, I miss you my darling, as I always do, but today is particularly hard because the ocean has been singing to me, and the song is that of our life together." For Garrett, the message is the only way he knows to express his undying love for a woman he has lost. For Theresa, wary of romance since her husband shattered her trust, the message raises questions that intrigue her. Challenged by the mystery, and driven to find Garrett by emotions she does not fully understand, Theresa begins a search that takes her to a sunlit coastal town and an unexpected confrontation. Brought together either by chance or something more powerful, Theresa and Garrett's lives come together in a tale that resonates with our deepest hopes for finding everlasting love. Shimmering with suspense and emotional intensity, Message in a Bottle takes readers on a hunt for the truth about a man and his memories, and about both the heartbreaking fragility and enormous strength of love. For those who cherished The Notebook and readers waiting to discover the magic of Nicholas Sparks's storytelling, here is an achingly lovely novel of happenstance, desire, and the choices that matter most.

A woman discovers a tragic love letter in a bottle on a beach, and is determined to track down its author.

My Thoughts:

Despite razzing from some of my book loving friends, up until last month, I had never read a Nicholas Sparks book. Shocking, I know! I think I had been putting it off because…well because I didn't want to cry lol! Is that a crazy reason to avoid reading a book? Maybe. But it’s not hard to guess that Nicholas Sparks’ books are very emotional.

Then this past weekend I was meandering around a local used book store and found a nicely loved copy of Message in a Bottle. Although it has been quite a while, I have seen the movie with Kevin Costner and Robin Wright at least twice. Since I had an idea of what to expect I decided to give the book a whirl.

I know there is always the debate on which is better, book or movie, but in this case I love both. Having seen the movie first, I found that reading the book added to that experience. But at the same time I felt it also took away from the reading experience. I couldn’t read it objectively because I thought about the movie with every turn of the page. And I wanted to watch the movie every time I picked up the book.

Both book and movie are emotional. The characters and their stories will creep into your heart and remain there long after reading/watching. And yes, I’ll admit that both made me cry.

Now for the question you’re all dying mildly curious to know the answer to....am I a new die hard Sparks fan after confessing my love for Message in a Bottle? Did I rush out to buy more of his books after reading one? Well, no. I really did enjoy the book but overall, I still don’t see myself reaching for the overly emotional books when deciding what my next read will be. I’m sure I will read other Sparks books…eventually, but they will be few and far between.

Page Eating Monster Army!!

ALERT! There’s a new threat spreading around the world. It’s worse than vampires, werewolves, and zombies combined. What can possibly be that bad? PAGE EATING BOOK MONSTERS!!! AAAAHHHHH!!!!! Books all over the world are at risk! There’s no protecting them from these monsters!!

HAHAHAHA!! I couldn’t resist!

I spent part of the weekend making these cute little monsters (aka corner bookmarks). I think they’re adorable so I wanted to share the idea with you. I cannot take full credit though, I found a basic tutorial and started out following it to the ‘t’ but then ventured out and experimented with other creatures. And just for full disclosure, I did not make the pig, my friend did. And we worked together on a couple of the other ideas.

Most of my little army have already been adopted and are being sent all over the world in the near future. But since last month was my blog’s first birthday I’ve decided to hold a giveaway for a Mini Monster Army. The winner will get to choose 7 of the monsters and I’ll make a set special for you. If you have any special requests I will attempt to fulfill them, but I cannot guarantee it depending on the difficulty.

Update: The giveaway has ended but I may have another in the future :)
Happy Page Munching!
