These Broken Stars
By Amie Kauffman & Meagan Spooner

Series: Starbound #1
Genre: YA, Fantasy/Sci-fi, Romance
Publisher: Disney Hyperion

Goodreads Summary:

It’s a night like any other on board the Icarus. Then, catastrophe strikes: the massive luxury spaceliner is yanked out of hyperspace and plummets into the nearest planet. Lilac LaRoux and Tarver Merendsen survive. And they seem to be alone.

Lilac is the daughter of the richest man in the universe. Tarver comes from nothing, a young war hero who learned a long time ago that girls like Lilac are more trouble than they’re worth. But with only each other to rely on, Lilac and Tarver must work together, making a torturous journey across the eerie, deserted terrain to seek help.

Then, against all odds, Lilac and Tarver find a strange blessing in the tragedy that has thrown them into each other’s arms. Without the hope of a future together in their own world, they begin to wonder – would they be better off staying here forever?

Everything changes when they uncover the truth behind the chilling whispers that haunt their every step. Lilac and Tarver may find a way off this planet. But they won’t be the same people who landed on it.

My Thoughts:

I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

This gorgeous cover and the description really sucked me in way before the book was released. I have also chatted with the authors a little on twitter and they are both beyond sweet…and they call me zombie girl which I love :-P. I also think it’s great that they sent the infamous green dress traveling to various authors which resulted in some entertaining blog posts (link listed above).

I think that because I loved the cover, description, and authors very early on I had very high expectations for These Broken Stars. Sadly, I have to admit that I was a teensy bit let down. It was still a good read but it just wasn’t quite to the level that I was expecting.

One of the main characters was frustrating as all get out in the first half of the book but thank friggin’ goodness that character (and another) grew as the story progressed. That along with a more active storyline in the second half of the book helped bump up my rating but even then I still wasn’t driven to that point of obsessed reading that would drive me to fit in reading any and every possible second.

I plan to continue the series because I think that like the characters in their books, Amie and Meagan will grow and I look forward to seeing where they go from here.

Overall Rating: 3.5 out of 5

  3. Hopefully you'll like the second one more than the first. I hear each one is going to feature a new planet and a new couple. Personally I loved the book. Yes I had aggravation with the character but I think that was on purpose. =) Can't wait to see what we both think of the next one! Now I plan to read Skylark and ...forget the name of the other in that series.

    1. You're right, it was probably that way to serve a purpose. I wonder if the second book follows the same characters. Guess I'll have to wait to read it and find out :-P

  4. I loved it but I actually had very low expectations going in. lol

I'm not a fan of big poofy dresses on covers but I like how this dress fit the story.
