Shatter Me (Shatter Me #1) by Tahereh Mafi

Series: Shatter Me #1
Genre: Young Adult, Dystopian
Publisher: HarperCollins

Juliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days.

The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.

The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war – and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.

Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

My Thoughts:

It had been a LONG time since I read the summary of Shatter Me so I wasn’t really sure what to expect going in. I was very quickly hooked and ended up finishing it in a day…well less than a day since I read another book as well.

I also have to say that I was very impressed with the author’s writing style. I can see how it could be too…verbose for some people but not me, I loved it. It’s so poetic and I’m kicking myself for not marking some of those passages that really stuck out to me!

This book, along with as Divergent, Hunger Games, and Perry Road, has really made me realize how amazing the dystopian genre can be.

And can I just say how much I love, LOVE the covers in this series...

  3. Ok so I haven't read these yet though I really want to. Yes the covers are pretty - but what I want to know - does that floating eye with the Trees, frost and flowers - have anything to do with the story or plot?? Or is it just pretty frill?

    1. Good question. I've only read Shatter Me so I can only speak for that one. I think it's most likely just frill. I do have a theory on how the cover ties in but it's really far fetched...and it's spoilery so I can't tell you :-P
