The Midnight Spell Blog Tour: Author Interview, Double Review, & Giveaway

Book Information

The Midnight Spell by Rhiannon Frater & Kody Boye

Publication date:
February 26th, 2013
Genre: YA Paranormal

Adam and Christy have been best friends since kindergarten. Always the perpetual outsiders in their small town in Texas, they’ve always had to deal with nasty comments from their classmates. Adam is called “gay” while Christy is called “witch.”

On both counts the bullies are right.

Their junior year in high school seems destined to be the same old same old until Christy decides to cast a love spell for Adam at the midnight hour. The next day an alluring and mysterious new boy enrolls at school and sets hearts a flutter, including Adam’s. Meanwhile, Christy’s mad crush on the handsome Ian seems to be going nowhere fast. Struggling to capture the heart of Ian while trying to come into her full witch powers is tough enough, but when a great evil arrives in town that threatens everything they hold dear, she realizes that finding a boyfriend is the least of her and Adam’s worries.

Soon Adam, Christy, their potential love interests, and their good friends Drifter and Olivia, will have to battle a force of darkness that has killed in their town before and will again.

Interview with Rhiannon and Kody

As part of the blog tour, we have Rhiannon and Kody here to answer a few questions.

How did you come up with the idea for The Midnight Spell?

Rhiannon: It’s hard to say. It was born out of Kody’s desire to possibly write a vampire YA. We got into a big discussion about what it could be about and before we knew it The Midnight Spell had taken form. It definitely is a departure from the usual YA vampire novel. I became a story about best friends with a paranormal backdrop.

Describe The Midnight Spell in one sentence.

Rhiannon: Two best friends square off against a terrifying evil.

Kody: Two friends fight to conquer the evils of high school, the tropes of love, and the horrible reality that magic does, in fact, exist, and sucks.

Rhiannon: LOL!

In The Midnight Spell we get two different POV’s. Did each of you write one POV?

Rhiannon: I wrote for Christy while Kody wrote for Adam. We did sometimes tweak each other’s chapters if we felt something was slightly out of character, but that didn’t happen too often.

Is it difficult co-authoring a book?

Rhiannon: To some degree. I had some ideas that didn’t make it into the book because Kody pointed out it wouldn’t work. Which made me want to smack him with my laptop. But he was right.

Kody: It’s different because an artist is used to having full control. It’s a bit greedy, really. Letting go of some of the power is hard, but ultimately makes for a good balance.

Did you have to change any of your writing habits to make it work?

Rhiannon: Yeah, definitely. We had to actually outline the entire book. I never do that. I usually jump into a novel with a general idea and let it grow organically. Also, I was aware that Kody might come up with some idea in the plot that would open up unexpected twists in the story. I had to learn how to write off of that sort of inspiration.

Kody: The plot twists happen. They did for both of us. It’s kind of like a pinball machine. You hit one thing and you get one thing, then something else from another. It’s difficult to learn, but once you get it, it’s like walking.

Do you have a favorite character from the book?

Rhiannon: I adore Christy. She made me laugh out loud more than once. I loved that though she has all these horrible insecurities, she has this wonderful gift of snark that gets her through the tough parts of being a teenager.

Kody: I liked the cat. And the broom. I won’t say more.

Are there any plans for another book featuring these characters?

Rhiannon: We’ll have to see how this first one sells before we make a solid decision. We’re aware we broke a lot of YA rules with this one by having the two leads not be romantically involved. I hope it sells well and that the demand for a second one will be there. We have a great idea for a second book, but we’ll see.

Kody: The same as Rhiannon said. It’s a bit of a toss-up whether we’ll continue with this. It all depends on the fans.

Thank you both so much for stopping by!

Double Review

Wendy’s Thoughts:

It took a while for me to get sucked into this book, but once I did it was very hard to put down. I loved the characters and would love to see them again in the future. I was on the edge of my seat pondering what would happen next and kept guessing throughout the book. In short, I was kept utterly spellbound by the magic in these pages.

Rhiannon Frater and Kody Boye are a powerful combination. I very highly recommend reading this book you will not be disappointed!

Overall rating: 5 out of 5

Jen’s Thoughts:

Sometimes people will ask you what book you would jump into if you could, well I’d love to jump into The Midnight Spell. The relationships between the characters is one of the things that stuck with me after reading this book. I don’t mean just the friendship between the two main characters but also the interactions with their parents and some of the other secondary characters. I loved how the banter, caring, and even protectiveness made those relationships feel so real. I think it would be great to spend time in Christy’s house with her, her parents, Adam, Olivia, Drifter, Callie, and the broom.

If you're looking for a ya paranormal with great characters, relationships between characters, twists, and a bit of suspense then definitely check out The Midnight Spell.

Overall Rating: 4.5 out of 5
