The Calling by Ashley Lynn Willis

Goodreads Summary:

Mandy Hardy lost more than a breast to cancer; she lost her fiancé when he dumped her a week before her mastectomy. Her ego bruised and her self-esteem battered, Mandy’s sure she’ll never fall in love again.

Justin Seward is a headstrong Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer with a heart of gold and the supernatural ability to command the seas. He had to hide his feelings while Mandy was engaged to his best friend. Now that she’s free, he’s vowed to make her his.

Together, they may hold the key to each other’s salvation. But when Justin’s past catches up with him, and Mandy’s ex-fiancé wants vengeance, they realize they might not live long enough for happily ever after.

My Review:

I would consider this book to be a dramatic romance with a splash of paranormal. It’s an emotional tale with action and a few twists and turns. Throughout the whole book my eyes were glued to the pages and I just could not put it down until the end.

The story begins with Justin performing a daring rescue. He is a Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer and he’s damn good at it. He also has powers to control water which he uses on occasion to aide in a rescue. The question is, will his powers or his job be the death of him?

Mandy is in a bad place after surviving breast cancer and the heartbreak of her fiancé breaking off their engagement. She is trying to piece her life back together but can she move past the emotional and physical scars long enough to find love?

It was so easy to fall in love with Mandy and Justin. I was rooting for them throughout the book!

I also love the cover. It’s very fitting to the book and the colors are gorgeous against the gray background tones!

Side Notes:
-I know some readers do not enjoy reading spicy scenes so just a forewarning there are some in this book.
-This books is due for release this month

  1. Thank you for the thoughtful review, Jen. The more reviews I'm receiving, the more I'm realizing that writing one is an art form. You need enough to grab a reader’s attention but not so much to spoil the read. Yours is perfect. And I'm glad you enjoyed the book. :)

  2. It does sound like a really good book! But I can't read anything about breast cancer. A good friend of mine died 3 yrs ago and I just am not ready to read about it yet. It still shakes me up.
I have a couple books on my shelf and I can't even touch them! Someday...

@ Wendy, So sorry to hear you lost someone due to breast cancer :(
When you're ready to read books with mentions of it, this one really is good!

  4. @ Jen, you're welcome. :)

@ Wendy, I'm sorry to hear about your loss, too. My MIL had breast cancer but we are very blessed that she is a survivor of the disease. My SIL's mother is currently fighting the disease. It's a heartbreaking journey, and you are not alone in being unable to read books with cancer victims. I sent a review request to a book blogger who was unable to read my book for the same reason. I wish you the best.

  5. I'm so glad I've spotted a review of this one from someone I trust because I've just this evening popped a copy onto my Kindle and planned to nudge it into the next slot (I have around 40% left to read of a novella first). It's always a relief to hear someone else has enjoyed it first--especially when it's from a new author/author you're unfamiliar with. Now I'm looking forward to it. :o)
